A good example of an optimal Artist list

A feature i've always dreamed to see in eJukebox would be the Artist list be sorted more intelligently, i mean taking care of the word "The" and of the artist firstname. And today, i've found a good example of a such "ideal" sorting: http://www.offbeat-baskerville.de/Band-Links/band-links.html
Concerning "The" i think that would be easy eJukebox recognize it automatically... And for the firstnames, as the program can't guess which word is a firstname or not, we must have a way to tell it! Maybe using the editor to underline in the artist field the right word to use (clicking on it) for correct the alphabetical sorting in eJ lists.
And concerning the additionnal band-links of the example, oh well! that could be a great idea for a future improvement... ;)

I agree with you wholeheartedly pirk, when it comes to the "The" sorting. I've done it manually in Tag&Rename, but it would be nice if eJ took care of it for you as well.

When it comes to the first name / last name sorting, i don't mind, i like to have the artists sorted first names first. I tried the last name first thing, but turned back, as there were too many names that just went illogical after the switch.

I AGREE with you junk!! But have you :o REALLY observed :o my example?? I think not... ;)
In my example the artists are sorted first-names first, BUT what it is great is the alphabetical sorting is even so based on the last-name!
Concerning the "The" it's similar: no need to remove it if the program could sort artists in comparison to the next word...

You see?
I think my suggestion could be satisfying for everyone... :D If it's not too hard to program, of course... ???

I think the word "The" and "A" (example--"A New Found Glory" ) are probably the only two words which can safely be "ignored" in sorting though. Even the word "And" might be a legitimate part of a name.

Hot dang, pirk, i didn't look close enough! Sorry.

Yet i found that it became too hard to locate the artists in the list when some had "The" in front of them. Made things a bit too confusing when locating an artist. I prefer the "Clash, The" kind of structure, as all the artist are still very easy to locate in the artistlist.

Wow, this is probably the best webpage on the entire Internet isn't it? Man this is good. I can't believe how good it is! Well..... actually I can...because it is my very own page! :D

All kidding aside: Amazingly, you really managed to stumble upon my web project! I am doing this site (http://www.offbeat-baskerville.de) for a weekly radio show that I am a big fan of. The artist list you mention is hopelessly outdated though, as the weekly playlists take up too much of my time.

So thanks for the comments about the "ideal" sorting, I have always sorted my artists this way, even with my very first music database program that I wrote myself on the Atari 800 some 23 years ago.

In those days, I used a special trick: My Artist field was simply split in two, a prefix/first name and a sorting part. So I had:

Prefix/First Name: The
Artist: Cure

or:

Prefix/First Name: (none)
Artist: Simple Minds

or:

Prefix/First Name: Andy
Artist: Summers

or

Prefix/First Name: Elvis
Artist: Costello And The Attractions

So by simply sorting by artist, but always displaying Prefix + Artist, I had an easy way to have perfect sorting, it worked without exception!

Now you have to tell me how, from a million music-related webpages on the web, you happened to find exactly mine!

Ah ah... :D I expected your reaction Demnos,
Really you don't have an idea? Even so it's quite simple... You know i'm curious, so i look everywhere around me... and sometimes i come across a good thing! Behind your MASK Demnos!! :D ;)

So, congratulations for your web site! I really would like eJukebox sort artists like you on your site. Thanks for to explain us your secret! I hope Audiosoft will be inspired by your method. The thing is to find an easy way to split artist names in eJukebox. That's why i proposed to underline the correct word using the editor. Maybe you have a better solution?

Junk, nice you agree! :)

So i deduce, you too, you would be interested by a more intelligent sorting...
Have you an idea on how to check off the good part of each artist names?

PS to Demnos:
You know i haved an ATARI 520 STF! and before that an ORIC 1. I wrote a few great programs, in BASIC! on these computers when i was younger... :)

Pirk, well, i wrote a larger reply, but it became misplaced somehow. But i agree in having a way of sorting artists that deals with prefixes in genral such as "the", "a", etc. But blending alphabetically sorted entries with ones having prefixes in front of their names will end up a bit confusing when you are looking for an artist and not just reading the list.

junk,
Well i see your point of view. I'm aware it's a difficult choice... For the moment i've completely removed all the "The" and any other prefix of the names! And i use commas to reverse first and last-names. But, first disadvantage, it's a bit laborious and above all after that my id3 tags look strange and not very conventional... They also appear strange in all eJukebox lists! Even so that bother me to have to search Bowie in the letter D! Not you?
Thus, Demnos solution attract me enough... Artist names are not ruined and the Artistlist is CORRECT!

Look! i have a NEW IDEA:
(that could suit to you junk, and everyone i hope...)
Maybe the Artistlist could display the prefix or the first-name in a smaller font than the artist name, or use a light font, or else simply highlight the first letter of each artist name in order to emphasize the fact it's an "advanced" alphabetical sorting and not a banal error! (And for those who have not yet chosen the significant artist word, or who don't want this, that would be the first letter in the tag which would be used (and highlighted) by default...) Sweet, no? :D

Heh, i was thinking about something in the same lines, but i do want the artist names aligned alphabetically, because it is the only non-confusing (for me, at least) way of finding an artist. But, in answer to your question, yes i dow want them aligned by first name first. It became way too much trouble the other way round. Some artists are major candidates for last name first, such as Zappa, Frank and Lennon, John. But i want PJ Harvey under P, Elliot Smith under E, because i think of him first name first. If i had Elton John in my list, i know i would look under E for elton and not John. But, then again, i would never look for him in the first place, and deleted him with a shriek of horror if i found him in my list. ;O

Demnos,

When will you launch the English version of your web site? :D Because... sorry but German is like Chinese for me!
Otherwise, there isn't a internet version of your great radio? Or perhaps i could pick up it on ASTRA TV satellite?

Well junk, PERFECT, it doesn't matter! You are right, that depend on artists... But my last "NEW IDEA" can take care of this: It's YOU who choose the significant word you prefer, using the editor like i explain in my post... And nothing prevent you to take the first-name for some artists, or even a prefix! (even i think that should be the default choice).

To sum up, each user could sort his Artistlist as he prefer:

- First-name first, sorting by the first-name (by default... & junk's choice! ;))

- Or first-name first, sorting by last-name (Demnos & Pirk's choice)

- With the prefix first, sorting on the prefix (by default)

- Or with the prefix first, sorting on the name (Demnos & Pirk's choice too!)

-> And all that selectable for each artist INDIVIDUALLY in the editor! (But only necessary for artists who pose a problem...)

-> Plus, user's "significant word" (i mean the word which come up in his mind when he search an artist, and so he had underlined in the editor) represented in the artistlist by its first letter highlighted. (in order to prevent any confusion)

In this way, never again any artist name will be ruined or lost...

First of all, thanks for the nice comments about my site, then I can forgive you for being so nosy and looking behind the mask... ;)

Regarding the site: Since the show runs on a german radio station, I decided to have the entire site in german as well, as there would probably be very little interest from people of other countries to learn about a german radio show...even though the DJ is a german-speaking brit!

Anyway, you can receive it via ASTRA. Look for NDR-Info:

- Analog 11,582 GHz, horizontal, 7,74 / 7,92 MHz Subcarrier

- Digital DVB, 11,836 GHz, horizontal, APID 3701

Or via RealAudio: www.ndr-info.de, then click on "Livestream" in the middle of the page, right hand side.

Showtime: Every Friday->Saturday Night at 0:05-2:00

Demnos,
I'm sorry, although i have been present at your rendezvous using the NDR "livestream", curiously that night it didn't work at all! So i've miss the music show... :(
The next week i will rather try to pick up it on Astra... because my internet connection is too capricious! Unless your radio show have so much success than it have temporarily saturated the net?! ;)
