Is it time to stop sniffing names?

Sometimes I find it a little annoying that ejukebox is using names in albums as "clues" for how to sort them. Sometimes it proves handy, for instance when there is "various" in the name, it's quite logical that it's a compilation.

But, sometimes it's not, and then one could need a possibility to override this. The only sollution I have found is renaming the artistname and/or albumname.

Here are a few examples:

Soundtrack of our lives - Infants freebase
(a swedish rock'n roll band)

---> Ej thinks it's a soundtrack and places it under compilations. If one removes the 'compilation' marker, it's readded at rebuild.

The Misfits - Project 1950

-----> Ej thinks it's made in 1950 and it pops up when sorting the albumlist for albums from the 50's.

Simular things happens when using genre. If a band has blues in it's name (a few bands that don't play the blues have) one can bet it's placed in the blues genre when sorting.

My point is that Album and artist names in some situations are bad clues and operators to follow when categorizing albums. Why not have the possibility to read this information from the 'compilation', 'genre', year etc fields only?

I totally agree with you Fishy, and i think it's a consensus... :D http://www.audiosoft.net/forums/viewthread.php?tid=591

I have already requested that sorting be based on genre and year tags exclusively, using them as efficient filters.... I think they are made for that use!! But until now, Audiosoft always remain deaf to THAT REQUEST! I don't understand why? Maybe they think it's secondary, or is it a deliberate choice??

Thanks if you could clarify that, Audiosoft.

nothing to add, it's pretty clear that using tags is the easiest and perfect solution !!!

The worst case: there is currently no way in eJukebox to display all tracks by Matt Johnson's band called "The The". As soon as you click on any listing where the band name is displayed (be it in Artist List, or any type of track listing), eJukebox will display all songs containing "The" which on my system is about 5000 songs...unusable.

it seems like it's time to stop sniffing names in other words :) Might be a hard habit to break though... Maybe somehow simular to an alcohol addiction.. Let's hope Audiosoft got some disulfiram or antabuse ready for ej :)

Ah... seems like Audiosoft has fixed part of this problem, at least. When i now select Year=1970, Ash's 1977 album (from 1996) doesn't appear anymore. But, however, if one artist has one album from the 70's, all the rest of his albums are also listed.

This is a problem, 'cause i don't want to see (or hear ;)) Bob Dylan's recordings from the mid 80's when i am supposed to look at 60's music only. :P

Ai! So you have found this 'classic' post from the archives :)

Yes it seems like some steps have been taken to fix this problem. The sniffing is not happening when one use drag and drop for instance. But, still way too many albums, those with simular names mostly are grouped together when entered from the albumlist. Even though they are from different artists.

If only ej could compare the artistfields and see that they differ...

In addition the genre sorting should only look at the 'genre field' in the tags and not listen to keywords as they often are bad indicators for it's genre relations.

I hope some work is laid down in these issues.. It makes me avoid the genre sorting some times (and maybe subconciously screwing the function up like mentioned in the post earlier today) ;)

I also hope something will happen with the "&" bug ... I have replaced every album and artist containing "&" with "and" to make drag and drop and the display of them appear correctly...
