I right click to add all songs by the artist to the playlist. This always puts the songs in the same order as they appear in the database. Is there a way to randomize the order?

Yes...it adds the songs to the playlist sorted by Album -> Track# - > Title

You can use "randomize playlist" from the MENU button over the playlist.
